Massively has an interesting article on some death knight polling results as taken by GamerDNA. The article, available here, looked at 500 regularly playing death knights main characters and posted some easy to read pie charts.
I’ll leave the chart viewing to you, but here’s some of the interesting summaries I’m seeing from the numbers.
Gnomes are the smallest race, in more ways than one, of death knights. I found this surprising given the lore fans worrying so much about cute gnome death knights running around everywhere, not to mention the humor I find in a gnome death knight. The orc population is also surprisingly small, given they get a racial bonuses for axes and there are lots of two-handed axes for death knights around.
Most death knights are “hardcore” players. We have a lot of level 80s compared to the casual player base, especially considering we started 15 level behind.
That sexy female draenei death knight voice is just masking a dude.
Unholy tree rules.
We like to look around, kill what we find, and we don’t say much to those left alive.

Grim is a Tauren. As I say in my ‘about’ page, I looked at that as being a rather dramatic fall from grace versus say…a blood elf or orc (who already have some nefarious sorts among their brethren). I can still have it “make sense” from a lore standpoint in that way.

Awful small sample size (~500) for a game with 11 million players. Not sure you can draw a whole lot of conclusion without knowing their sample size. Some directionally interesting info, but nothing you can bet gold on.

On my server:
gnomes are around 10%, also human DK are close to 40% cause of superior racial, followed by dranai and NE. Dwarfs are less represented DK race alliance side.
Horde side 40% are BE, and rest equally split between orcs/tauren/ undead.Trolls are less represented as DKs.
